Influence/Impact

The influence of the Dada movement not only affected the art world, but also the design world.

  • The art of found objects, the idea that anything can be art; art is the human creation. Readymades and installations of these objects are still produced by modern artists today (a great example: the current exhibition in gallery 1 here on campus; I would say this was definitely influenced by Dada)
  • Performance art: Live performances today still echo those of the Dada era, especially dance performances, i.e. interpretive dance.
  • Collages still abound, ranging anywhere from elementary school classrooms to mood boards to serious art studios.
  • Letterforms as visual shapes: letters are used as shapes and art objects just the same as squares or lines, and also art rules are applied to letters more in typesetting.
  • The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even by Marcel Duchamp was probably the most famous of his works, and influenced later art tremendously
  • Surrealism: Surrealism illustrated dream like images, basically taking Dada to a new level of abstraction.
